Zombies, Run! app review

‘Run in the Real World. Become a Hero in Another.’

Persuading people to exercise and keep fit can be extremely difficult; many apps have tried, and many have failed. The market is saturated with apps that attempt to persuade people to keep fit; but none are as radical as ‘Zombies, Run!’. What better way to get people to run than by making them feel as if they are in a zombie apocalypse, with hordes of zombies chasing after them that will almost definitely eat them alive if they slow down or stop. Well, that is exactly what Zombies, Run! has done; and it’s absolutely brilliant.

‘Only a few have survived the zombie epidemic. You are a Runner en-route to one of humanity’s last remaining outposts. They need your help to gather supplies, rescue survivors, and defend their home.’

‘And you have another mission — one they don’t know about...’

How does it work?

The app works as a persuasion device; making you feel like you want to keep active and turning it into an enjoyable activity rather than a chore or something you should try to avoid. You can walk, jog or run anywhere, and the GPS tracking device will record the fitness data. This app is built to be listened to through headphones; the missions, storyline updates and music are streamed through depending on how active you are, and the audio sounds scarily realistic.

When chased by zombies, you are persuaded to speed up (so you don’t get eaten!); this causes huge boosts of adrenaline, which in turn helps you to keep active for a longer period of time. In app, when active, you will collect supplies to build your own ‘base’, recover supply drops and advance to the next mission.

What else is included?

200 missions – ‘You’ll never run out of motivation'

Base builder – ‘Collect supplies to rebuild your town'

Sync online – ‘Track your runs and share your progress'

Interval Training – ‘Create your own missions’

Award winning Story – ‘So good you’ll want to play every day’

The review

Zombies, run! is a brilliantly innovative app which is extremely effective at motivating people to keep active and healthy. The developers have created something special with this app, which turns something that is usually viewed as a chore into something that is actually fun and entertaining. The idea of the app is actually very simplistic, and this is what makes it effective at motivating users to keep active.

The zombie chases are a great way to give you a bit of adrenaline and encouragement to push on, but if you are sticking to a very specific training routine, it can become a bit of a nuisance. Fortunately, as with many other aspects of this app, that can be personalised. This is probably the most impressive thing about this fitness app; anything from selecting your tracking method to deciding on the background music can be modified for your preference. Another great thing about this app is that it can be used by people of all fitness levels; whether you are just getting started or have been running for years, this app will help you improve your overall fitness and have fun at the same time.

‘The biggest smartphone fitness game, ever’.

It is no surprise that this particular fitness app already has one million users. It’s adrenaline fuelled, it’s scary, and more than anything it does exactly what it means to do; help people with their fitness. This app is one of the only apps on the market that has set out to be different; many apps just track fitness or work as fitness motivation. Zombies, Run! completely changes the game, and it's eating the competition.
